BROOKFIELD – Governor Quinn recently announced an investment of $1 million to assist in the development of a new building at Brookfield Zoo designed for children and adults with disabilities, underserved communities and veterans and their families.
At the official announcement on Saturday, September 6, the governor highlighted the benefits that Brookfield Zoo has provided to the community and the state.
“For more than 80 years, Brookfield Zoo has supported the students, teachers and families of Illinois through its educational initiatives and community outreach,” Quinn said.
The state investment will leverage more than $1 million in private funding towards the construction of the $7 million building. The state investment is coming from the Illinois Jobs Now capital program.
State Senator Steven Landek (D-Bridgeview), who was on hand for the announcement, spoke to the impact the zoo has on the surrounding communities.
“Brookfield Zoo attracts visitors from near and far with its impressive exhibits and ongoing efforts to educate people of all ages on nature and conservation,” said Landek. “This new exhibit should increase the zoo’s attendance and give a boost to tourism businesses in the area.”
